About the Item

A late 19th to early 20th century Japanese export bronze oil lamp in the Chinese style, retaining its original Belgian A.W. burner. The body is cast in patinated bronze with pierced fretwork panels and applied gilt roundels featuring stylised dragons in high relief. The lamp stands on an ornate tripod base with foliate scroll feet and a Greek key frieze. This piece reflects the late Meiji period tradition of producing finely cast metalwork for export, incorporating Chinese decorative motifs that were fashionable among Western buyers of the time. The burner is stamped "Lampe Dite Electrique A.W. Bruxelles" and "Lampe Sans Suintement A.W. Déposé", indicating Belgian manufacture, c.1880–1910. The underside of the base has been drilled, likely for later electrical conversion. A dent is present to the side of the font, and the original shade is not included.
