About the Item

An exquisite pair of antique Russian neoclassical ormolu and blue opaline glass candelabras. Each candelabra is centered by a turquoise-blue opaline glass sphere, mounted on a gilt bronze support with stylized acanthus leaf decoration. From this central element, three scrolling ormolu candle arms extend outward, each terminating in a candle holder with foliate-form bobeches. The arms are further adorned with cascading chains of faceted rock crystal drops and pendalogues, suspended in multiple strands of oval and pear-shaped prisms. Above the central opaline glass body rises a faceted rock crystal shaft surmounted by a ormolu corona from which additional crystal drops are suspended. Delicate gilt wire branches curve outward around the shaft, each hung with further prisms, enhancing the layered arrangement of crystal elements. The bases are constructed of cylindrical white marble drums mounted on square plinths, enriched with gilt bronze beaded borders and swags of drapery between rosettes. The combination of white marble, turquoise glass, and ormolu mounts creates a striking interplay of contrasting materials within a balanced neoclassical framework. These candelabras follow the Russian neoclassical tradition, which frequently combined white marble, brightly colored opaline glass, and finely chased gilt bronze. The use of turquoise opaline glass spheres was especially characteristic of Russian decorative arts of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, reflecting the influence of both French and Russian design. The incorporation of cut rock crystal drops alongside ormolu and marble bases situates these candelabras within the broader context of Russian luxury production, where such works were often produced for palatial interiors and aristocratic patrons.
