About the Item

A spectacular pair of French 19th-century Louis XVI-style cut rock crystal and ormolu lamps. Each lamp is structured with a triangular ormolu base decorated with scrolling volutes, floral garlands, and acanthus leaf mounts. The base sits on four foliate feet and is finished with a circular plinth detailed with applied floral roundels and classical patterns. Rising from the base are scrolled supports that frame the lower stem, enriched with floral bosses and chased detailing. The shafts are composed of alternating sections of cut rock crystal and ormolu. Each lamp features a central ovoid rock crystal element, flanked above and below by faceted rock crystal discs, their surfaces cut in a diamond profile. These crystal sections are connected with finely chased ormolu mounts decorated with leaf and petal motifs. The upper section is surmounted by an ormolu urn-form mount with lion mask heads, resting above a faceted rock crystal collar. The ormolu throughout is fire-gilt, displaying a bright and even surface, with detailed casting visible in the scrolling, floral, and figural ornamentation. The combination of cut rock crystal and gilt bronze reflects the decorative style of Louis XVI, characterized by symmetrical arrangement, neoclassical motifs, and luxurious materials. This pair demonstrates the high-quality production of 19th-century French decorative arts, where rock crystal was combined with ormolu to create lamps of refined proportion and striking contrast.
