About the Item

Paul-François Berthoud’s "Visage de Femme" is a bronze jardiniere or planter vessel. This artwork features the face of a windswept woman. Although she is only viewable from the chest up, she is gilded and nude with long, swirling, wavy locks that appear to form the vessel’s shape. Her hair creates the shape of the jardiniere’s opening and continues along the vessel’s sides but stops on the object’s reverse. The differentiation between the vessel and her hair is seen in the dark patinated bronze background, contrasting with her golden locks. Item #: YS-20965 Artist: Paul-François Berthoud Country: France Circa: 1900 Dimensions: 4" diameter, 5.75" height Materials: Gilt Bronze Signed: Louchet foundry stamp Literature: Pictured in: Dynamic Beauty: Sculpture of Art Nouveau Paris, by Macklowe Gallery, The Studley Press, 2011, p. 55. Arwas, Victor. Art nouveau: the French aesthetic. London, Andreas Papadakis, 2002, p. 230-231 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: The etymology of the word Jardiniere is taken directly from the French jardinière, the female form of the occupational noun gardener. In English, the word denotes an ornamental planter designed to display plants. This object is no ordinary vessel for planting common garden herbs; it is intended to display especially extravagant foliage, as evidenced in the name and material gilt bronze utilized.

By Gabriel Argy-Rousseau
Located in New York, NY
Argy-Rousseau's near-unique ability to gracefully soften the starkness of Art Deco design without ever sacrificing the strength of the design is on full display in this remarkable, petite masterpiece. Argy-Rousseau's work 'Visages en Medallion' showcases a woman sporting a short bob hairstyle reminiscent of the wigs worn by ancient Egyptian women and popularized by the French Garçonne (tomboys). The concept of the 'Man in the Moon' gained newfound relevance in popular culture during the early 20th century, particularly with Georges Méliès' film 'A Trip to the Moon...

A French Art Deco Pate-de-verre Lamp by Gabriel Argy-Rousseau depicts two red tigers stalking their prey in a fan of purple grass. The pate-de-verre rests upon a wrought iron base also incised with tiger-like grooves. The fin de siècle French populace was captivated by exotic and dangerous subjects, such as the perceived savagery of animals and peoples of distant lands. The tigers' posture is evidently influenced by the Persian lion relief...
