Phyllis Morris Original Poodle Table Lamp, Signed, Blue, 1952 Hollywood Regency

About the Item

Phyllis Morris original poodle table lamp, signed, Blue, 1952 Hollywood Regency. Iconic American Pop Design. Signed. Rare custom blue poodle. With original harp and lace shade. From the 1950s to her passing in 1988, Phyllis created hundreds of designs blending the Hollywood Regency and California eclectic styles with her interpretation of Baroque-meets-Fantasy. Phyllis Morris’ first and most iconic design was the Poodle Lamp, circa 1952, which she often delivered to clients personally in her pink Cadillac convertible. After sculpting the original poodle base, which she based on her own pink-dyed pup, Morris left it on consignment in a Beverly Hills shop. She had friends place orders for it; the shop asked for a dozen models, and Morris was not only in business but in the headlines. By 1953, she founded Phyllis Morris Originals...a studio and brand that countered the established design world’s pared-down, impersonal, mass-produced ‘modern look’ with uniquely extravagant, handmade designs, such as throne chairs, unique cabinets and signature canopy beds, all made in California using only the highest quality of materials. "Minimalism is for those without much to say,” Morris used to say. Morris’ high profile clients included Joan Crawford, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, Howard Hughes, Aristotle Onassis, Barbra Streisand, Liberace, Gladys Knight, Jerry Vale and Cher, among many, many others.
