About the Item

The Artichoke Fossil lamp, created by artist Jenna Basso Pietrobon, is a unique, handcrafted piece. Each lamp is meticulously built by hand and features impressions made using real vegetables, with the artichoke taking center stage. --- Other Artichoke Fossil Lamps can be made upon request. Each will be unique. In addition, lamps made with a range of different vegetables are available. There are Artichoke Fossil Plates which can be hang on the wall. ---- This work is crafted in Nove di Bassano, a town in Veneto, Italy, renowned for its ceramic tradition spanning generations. My grandfather, a ceramicist born in this very town, immigrated to Canada in the 1950s. Returning to Nove di Bassano allowed me to reconnect with my roots and create this artwork in the place where my family's legacy began. The artichoke itself carries rich layers of meaning, both historically and symbolically. In ancient times, the artichoke was revered as a symbol of resilience, transformation, and health. Originating from the Mediterranean, it has been cultivated for centuries and was prized in Roman and Greek cultures not only for its culinary uses but also for its medicinal properties. The artichoke is celebrated for its benefits to the body—it is rich in antioxidants, supports liver health, and aids digestion. These qualities make it a powerful metaphor for nourishment and renewal. In Italian history, the artichoke holds a special place as a beloved ingredient in traditional cuisine and a symbol of regional pride. Artichokes are featured in countless Italian recipes, from Roman-style *carciofi alla romana* to Venetian *carciofi fritti*. Its cultural significance extends beyond the plate, representing the ingenuity of Italian agricultural practices and the enduring connection between the land and the people. The lamp is part of a larger project, *Sow, Sew, and So*, which draws inspiration from the Italian Futurists' perspectives on food, Vandana Shiva's advocacy for sustainable agriculture, and my own experiences with chronic illness. Struggling with heavy metal toxicity heightened my awareness of the intersections between the food and pharmaceutical industries. It also deepened my commitment to promoting better agricultural practices and challenging corporate control in these critical areas. The central theme of *Sow, Sew, and So* revolves around the fossilization of vegetables. By imprinting vegetables into clay, I create metaphorical fossils—a lasting reminder of the importance of preserving biodiversity and respecting nature's cycles. This work invites reflection on themes of time, transformation, and resilience. By choosing the artichoke as a central motif, I honor its historical and cultural significance, its vital role in supporting human health, and its connection to the land of my ancestors. A portion of the proceeds from this project supports seed banks worldwide, contributing to the preservation of our planet’s agricultural heritage.

Italian Post Modern Table Lamp made in Murano Glass in the style of Umberto Riva
By Umberto Riva
Located in Roma, IT
Splendid Postmodern table lamp produced in Italy by the "Punto Luce" company using glass made by Murano glass artisans. This is an "atmosphere" lamp and not a reading lamp. The dimmable halogen bulb releases a light that is softened and tinged with pastel colors by the shaded and colored Murano glass. The lamp is essentially composed of two modules: The first is a base in light gray overlaid with white Murano glass, decorated with thin iron gray lines. This has a conical shape and houses the halogen bulb inside. The second is a large shaded Murano glass lampshade. Its concave shape, like an upside-down hat or a serving plate; unlike normal "lampshades" which force and direct the light into a cone, this diffuses it upwards, widening its radius. A heavy black enamelled metal base stabilizes the weight of the lamp making it very stable. The style of this lamp recalls the elegant and essential 80s lamps...
