Sculptural Clear Crystal Glass Table Lamp by Schneider, France, 1950s

About the Item

Mid-Century French Crystal Table Lamp by Schneider, 1950s This crystal table lamp was made in the 1950s by Cristalleries Schneider in Epinay-sur-Seine, France. The base is shaped from clear crystal into a sculptural, swirling form that reflects light beautifully. Its appearance shifts depending on the viewing angle—a strong example of Schneider’s mid-century craftsmanship and glass artistry. The piece is hand-signed underneath: “Schneider, France” (visible in the photo), confirming its authenticity. The lamp stands 22 cm high (including the socket), is 12 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. We can fit the lamp with either an EU or US plug at no extra cost. The lampshades aren't included. But, if any of the lampshades in the photos are desired, just let us know. Some of the lampshades are available on our 1stDibs store page. Dimensions Height (including light socket): 22 cm Height: 34 cm (including small lamp shade) Width: 12 cm Depth: 6 cm ABOUT CHARLES SCHNEIDER Charles Schneider (1881–1952), a Paris-born artist, began his glassmaking career at Daum in Nancy, where he trained in engraving, drawing, and modeling. In 1913, Charles and his brother Ernest founded their own glassworks near Paris, initially making light bulbs. After World War I, the company—renamed Verreries Schneider—shifted to art glass, producing cameo and acid-etched pieces in the Art Nouveau and emerging Art Deco styles. Schneider became known for vibrant designs, bold forms, and innovative techniques like marqueterie de verre and colored powder applications. Their top-tier lines were signed "Schneider," while more accessible ranges were branded Le Verre Français or Charder, sold in both art galleries and major department stores. By the mid-1920s, the company employed 500 people and exported widely, especially to the U.S. However, the 1929 economic crash led to a sharp decline. Production slowed through the 1930s, and the original factory closed in 1937. In 1950, Charles and his son reestablished Cristalleries Schneider, focusing on hand-blown lead crystal in line with 1950s design trends. These later works, often functional art pieces like vases, ashtrays, and lamps, were all signed “Schneider France.” The factory closed in 1981, marking the end of a significant chapter in 20th-century French glassmaking.
