Tichelaar Makkum Delft Chinoiserie Lamps (1940-60) New Green Velvet Lampshades

About the Item

Exquisitely handcrafted by Amitābha Studio in Amsterdam from a pair of vintage Royal Tichelaar Makkum vases (circa 1940–1960), this one-of-a-kind set of table lamps celebrates the enduring beauty of Dutch Delftware with a Chinoiserie twist. The hand-painted vases, created by master painters at the Royal Tichelaar Makkum factory—the Netherlands’ oldest ceramic workshop—feature bold, symmetrical floral motifs in deep cobalt, terracotta orange, and earthy green. We’ve paired the bases with new bespoke lampshades made from moss-green velvet, handmade by an atelier near Amsterdam. The lamps were created without harming the original vases in any way. Each vase bears the hallmark of Makkum’s rich ceramic legacy: wheel-thrown and decorated by hand using centuries-old tin-glazing techniques. The swirling chinoiserie motifs nod to traditional Chinese porcelain, while their bold scale and stylized forms reflect a distinctly Western, mid-20th-century interpretation of the style. This fusion creates a dynamic interplay between East and West, history and reinvention—imbuing the pair with both gravitas and charm. Royal Tichelaar Makkum, founded in 1572, has preserved its artisanal production methods for over four centuries. By the mid-20th century, when these vases were made, the factory had become a standard-bearer of Dutch ceramic craftsmanship, with each piece individually painted by trained master decorators. These vases reflect that lineage, marked by elegant brushwork and meticulous color composition. The soft velvet lampshades add a luxurious contemporary contrast to the richly ornamented bases, allowing the set to harmonize effortlessly within both classic and modern interiors. Ideal for a bedroom, library, or living room, this pair offers refined symmetry and timeless decorative appeal. We also ensure compatibility for global use by offering a free plug customization service to match the electrical standards of your specific country. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. ⸻ Please note: The lamps are fully wired for use in the U.S. If you're outside the U.S., we also ensure compatibility for global use by offering a free plug customization service to match the electrical standards of your specific country. Additionally, the listed height includes the lampshades. For U.S. customers: Any new tariff-related surcharges are already included in our shipment costs. We take care of these fees in advance so there are no unexpected charges upon delivery. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us!
