About the Item

Gorgeous bronze female figurine Art Nouveau made by Italian manufactory. Hallmarked: G. Bessi (signature well visible at right lateral side). It is the Italian sculptor Giuseppe Bessi (1857-1922). Some informations referring to the artist: Giuseppe Bessi studied at Academy of Fine Arts of Florence. He founded his own manufactory in Volterra (in year 1879). The sculptor specialized in manufacturing busts and figurines mainly made of alabaster, marble and onyx. Beyond that, Bessi made some bronze figurines. - The sculptor was one of most important representatives of Italian official art of sculpture of second half of 19th century. In his work, Neoclassizism was combined with Art Nouveau Style in finest manner. Bessi was leader of School of Fine Arts at Volterra, where he taught sculpture - with main focus on alabaster figurines and busts - until his death in year 1922. Hence the alabaster sculptures created by Giuseppe Bessi have become famous, after having been presented at international art exhibitions for example in Paris and Torino. Bessi's work was sold worldwide (to USA, too) so that many private collectors esteemed Bessi's busts and figurines. Specifications: The female figurine clad in long gown with spaghetti straps stands on square base. She stretches herself as well as seizes a cloth with both hands - thus one covering her back as well as framing her figurine in finest manner. Measures: Total height: 55.0 cm (= 21.65 inches) Measures of base: 12.5 x 12.5 cm (= 4.92 x 4.92 inches) Depth of base: 12.5 cm (= 4.92 inches) Total weight: 7.70 kg / 7700 GRAMS / 271.60 OZ.
