About the Item

Restoration-period mahogany-veneered boat-shaped sofa-bed with slightly inverted headboard. The front is soberly adorned with an ormolu plaque featuring scrolls and fleurons framing a finely chased female face with antique hairstyle in a laurel wreath. Two pairs of detached columns adorned with ormolu rings take their place on the side jambs of this boat bed forming legs. This bed can be adjusted to suit your needs, and can be placed against a wall to offer all the comfort of a sofa. It is furnished with a mattress (180x85 cm), six cushions and four small cushions, upholstered in a striped gold jacquard fabric. It is topped by a canopy adorned with gilded bronzes. Bed canopy is adjustable up to 4m high The bed is also sold without the canopy.

Austrian Biedermeier-period sofa crafted of mahogany veneer, upholstered in beige fabric with geometric motifs. This refined piece of furniture has rolled armrests decorated with twisted patterns and medallions, and large backrest highlighted with scrolls and palmette. The sofa rests on four square fluted legs. The Biedermeier period began in the states of the German Confederation and in the Austrian Empire in 1815 (Congress of Vienna) and ended in 1848 (March Revolution). The Biedermeier style referred mainly to the decorative arts, but also included sculpture and painting. In contrast to the opulence and heroism of Napoleon's Empire, the Biedermeier style promoted calm and simplicity. From 1830 onwards, it embodied a new, comfortable, bourgeois way of life. In furnishing, the emphasis was placed on the structure of the furniture that had robust and geometrical forms, softened by curves. A fine late 18th Century large Dutch four-poster bed with exceptional posts and ealy 19th century Italian carved giltwood swans. The posts with well carved elements: neoclassical urns, capitals, carved turnings and vase sections; their most attractive part is the boxwood and mahogany lined inlay which we haven't seen on English 18th beds. In addition, unusally, the rails are designed to be seen and made in mahogany and framed with carved and plain astragal beads. Good sturdy construction, fixed together with steel bolts and will dismantle for shipping. Needs new drapery hangings and the white fabric around the end posts & headboard should be cleaned or replaced. For the new mattress, we would recommend a box spring mattress with a well (height is saved with part of the box mattress fitting between the rails) and a second mattress on top. But you could also fit lathes and just have the top mattress with cut out corners to fit around the posts: norris bedding custom make such mattresses. This bed originally had fabric around the top but for an additional cost we could make a wooden cornice...
