19th century antique French Breton carved oak bed duke of Brittany coat of arms ~Direct from France~ ~Unique 19th century French bed, direct from the Brittany region, highly carved with details particular to the Breton style~ ~Headboard surmounted by highly carved Duke of Brittany Coat of Arms, having two standing foxes to either side of the center crest with crown~ ~Traditional Breton “spindles” and large finials complete the crest rail trim~ ~Carved blocks about the turned and fluted balusters on either side of the headboard, with a full length carved center panel of floral and foliate scrolls surrounding a center cartouche~ ~Footboard panel features figural scene in relief, depicting 3 barefoot ladies dancing and one seated, whilst two men play bagpipes and a horn (large hand carved trees, water vessels, fabulous details)~ ~Semi-circle carved panels to each side and large lower carved banding and moulding to the bottom~ ~Side rails are also carved, always a sign of quality~ ~Solid oak, heavy and strong, well built by craftsmen of the period~ ~c1890~ (European size bed, not American sized) Brief note about Brittany Style Antique French Furniture The Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France are manifest in the furniture produced in this region. The Breton style is as distinctive as its special culture and easily recognizable due to its very ornate carvings. Historically, the local economy in Brittany was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime activities, so one often finds circles and ship's wheels as a common decorative motif in the Brittany Style of antique furniture. Often antique furniture in the Brittany Style was carved out of chestnut or oak, with a very dark finish. A hallmark feature of the Brittany Style of French Country Antique Furniture is the symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent a strong work ethic, piety, and the enjoyment of life.
