About the Item

19th Century French Louis XVI painted bed with caning is a splendid example of what some have called 'Paris Country' where a refined style is made more casual primarily by a finish treatment. Produced by Hopilliart & Leroy in Paris, it ably expresses the neoclassical style that so enamored Louis XVI and his queen. The design reflects a headboard and footboard differing only in height and proportion. Both feature very subtly arched crowns with egg & dart trim under which appears carvings that can be best described as gathered fabric. The crown is connected to cornerposts with pomegranite finials atop plinths with rosettes, which in turn rest upon tapered columns with spiral flutes and acanthus plume bases. The columns rest upon larger plinths with rosettes where the lower frameworks attach as well as the side rails, which are carved with pronounced spiral ribbon motif. Tapered and fluted legs provide support. The head and footboard frameworks both surround caning, and in the case of the footboard, a double layer for added longevity. The painted finish is a lovely taupe that has achieved an incredible patina and charm over the past century. The bed is depicted without slats to allow for versatility. Slats are included in the price, and upon the customer's request flush mount slats can be provided which will allow one to use a full size mattress set to ride atop the rails, or if a custom mattress is preferred to ride inside the rails, the slats can be recessed from the top edge in a more traditional manner. Circa 1880s Headboard measures 50.5H x 51W; footboard is 34H x 51W; rails are 76L.

19th Century French Louis XVI Painted Bed with Caning
Located in Dallas, TX
19th Century French Louis XVI Painted Bed with Caning is a remarkable work of the furniture maker's art! Sculpted from walnut, it features artistry exhibited from the crown of the headboard to the arbalette base of the footboard which happens to match the side rails. The gracefully arched headboard consists of complex hand-carved molding surrounding a Greek coin border all across the crown, centered with an exquisitely rendered wreath of roses tied together with flowing ribbon. Egg finials on foliate bases adorn the corners, underneath which are rosettes and bell flowers, with more rosettes on the corner of the caned panel. As should be the case, the footboard has received equal attentions of the sculptor, with a boldly molded framework in an ovoid shape centered with a laurel wreath tied with ribbon mounted atop the double caned panel. Triangular rosettes provide an accent, with square rosettes serving as end caps on each corner under which are more bell flowers. The original painted finish has achieved a lovely patina and a charming state of distress that only adds to the allure and desirability of this magnificent work of the cabinetmaker's art! Accommodates full mattress with extra width to spare, or a custom mattress that can use queen sheets...

Antique Italian Neoclassical Painted Queen Bed
Located in Dallas, TX
Antique Italian Neoclassical Painted QUEEN Bed is a splendid expression of the classical style that dates back three thousand years! Even the French embraced the style during the reign of Louis XVI, but in reality it never really went out of fashion. This example, with rectilinear headboard, rails and centermost portion of the footboard, is softened into the room with the introduction of radiused curves a the lower portion of the footboard's sides to connect to the rails. Beautifully carved molded detail appears in abundance across the entire framework, including spiral ribbon, egg and tongue & dart, with a particularly resplendent vine relief across the top of the headboard that is amazingly intricate. As it is supposed to be, the footboard steals the show, designed to take front stage in the room, and featuring an exquisite torchere set...
