About the Item

A museum-worthy American Empire bed, circa 1820, crafted from solid walnut with Rosewood veneer. The bed features hand-cut mortise-and-tenon joinery, and original large iron bed bolts – a hallmark of authentic early 19th-century construction. The custom bed was designed in an unusually large size for the 19th century (the interior frame measures approximately 67 inches wide by 89 inches long), making this historical piece functional today as the frame can well accommodate a modern Queen mattress size. This bed is a rare example of Southern American craftsmanship, and the details of its craftsmanship suggest European influence (probably German, based on markings present on other related pieces accompanying this bed). The bed is unaltered and structurally sound, and has remained in the prominent Ansley family of Georgia since it was made. Provenance: From the collection of the Prominent Ansley Family of Georgia. Originally crafted in the 19th century for Jesse and Catherine Ansley of Georgia, probably upon the occasion of their wedding in 1818. The bed was made as part of a suite that included an armoire dated in German Kurrent script to December, the month of their wedding. The bed was passed through the Ansley family by descent, and was later owned by Jesse Augustus Ansley, brother of Edwin P. Ansley, the visionary real estate developer behind Ansley Park and the Ansley Golf Club in Atlanta. This bed has remained in the Ansley family for over 200 years, traveling through Georgia, Mississippi, Virginia, and Tennessee while staying in continuous use. A written ownership history will be provided to the buyer, enhancing its historical significance and collectible value. Condition & Restoration Details: Currently in unrestored condition, with wear consistent with age Structurally sound and was in continuous use until December 2024 Price reflects its restored condition – once professionally restored, the listing will be updated with new images. Why This Bed is an Investment-Grade Piece: Extremely rare American Empire bed with documented provenance Brazilian Rosewood veneer – one of the most coveted exotic woods, now highly restricted and virtually unavailable outside of antiques. One-family ownership for over 200 years – a true collector’s piece with historical integrity. Perfect for collectors, designers, or institutions seeking a statement piece with deep historical significance. This exquisite American Empire bed is an opportunity to own a truly remarkable piece of early American history. Serious inquiries only.

Antique Victorian Walnut and Burl Walnut Tall Lincoln Style Full Size Bed
Located in Topeka, KS
Gorgeous antique Victorian tall Lincoln style full size bed in solid walnut and walnut burl with footboard and side rails. It is in wonderful original vintage condition. That does not mean it is without beautiful age patina of marks and distressing from over 100 years of use. The very top of the carved crown on the headboard had cracked and broken away and been lost over the years. But one of our staff artisans has hand carved a replacement. It is spectacular. There is also some new bracing to the back of the headboard to help with stability. Please see photos, circa mid-late 19th century. When I was a teenager this high Victorian style of bed is what my mom (a very talented interior designer) put in my bedroom (previously I had a white and pink frilly canopy bed my dad made me) and it remained in her home long after I left. In my room it was paired with the matching Victorian dresser and washstand as nightstand. Beautiful. Fast forward a few years and I installed that very same high Victorian walnut bed in my 8-year-old only granddaughter’s bedroom. But this time I paired it with Industrial stainless-steel vintage hospital nightstands...
