About the Item

Exceptional so-called Empress bed which is supported by four legs formed by the tips of cornucopias. At the head, the horns are surmounted by two large swans, wings erect and neck folded; at the foot, the horns are filled with flowers and fruits. On the crosspiece are carved large scrolls ending in lotus flowers from which escapes a thick garland of flowers in the center of which a medallion contains the monogram J. In 1812, Josephine decided to completely redevelop her large bedroom de Malmaison, entrusting its architect Louis-Martin Berthault (1770-1823) with the task of renewing the decor and furnishings. Berthault then gave the room the shape of a rotunda, evoking a tent, of which we can still see the reconstruction desired by Napoleon III in 1865. This bed is the same as that which was delivered by Jacob-Desmalter to Malmaison but it is most likely Berthault who provided the design of the berth, quite similar to the one he designed shortly before for the Empress at Compiègne. A drawing for Josephine's bed, probably a project by Berthault's hand, offering some variations with the finely executed model, was acquired by the museum in 2005. It was in this bed that Josephine breathed her last on May 29 1814. Due as a share to Prince Eugene, it was taken to Munich, along with all the decor for Josephine's bedroom. In 1865, according to Napoleon III's wishes, his grandmother's bedroom was restored as accurately as possible, based on a watercolor by Loeillot (Swedish royal collections); in 1868, the Duke of Leuchtenberg, grandson of Eugène, offered the Emperor the original bed, which was thus able to return to its place; on the other hand, a sky from an apartment in Fontainebleau in the 19th century replaces the original, which has been lost. Once again emptied of its decor and furniture in 1870, the bedroom only found its bed in 1906, when the museum opened. For more information or additional photos, do not hesitate to contact us.
