In medieval castles, the lord and his lady slept on wooden beds of grand scale, heavily draped to provide privacy and protect from drafts. The beds were dressed in linens, quilts and fur coverlets, piled with fine down pillows. Personal servants -- to be close by -- often slept on a low bed designed to roll under the larger bed and be pulled out as needed. Thus, the trundle bed, also known as the truckle bed, was born in a grand place, but of lowly character. In later times, this space-saving concept was used by cottagers whose living arrangements could be quite cramped. Half the beds could be dispensed with, to make room for daily activities. The beds were a simple staple of the Shakers in the mid 1800s. As times and tastes changed, the trundle bed was more often than not relegated to the children's quarters where they created extra sleeping space as families grew or friends visited. American newspaper columnist Eugene Field (1850-95), a native of St. Louis, Mo., who is best remembered for his children's verses, was clearly a trundle-bed child. His "Little Boy Blue" toddles "off to his trundle bed," while the dreaming "Wynken, Blynken and Nod" fish the sky in a wooden shoe that is really, you guessed it, a trundle bed.
