19th Century Painted Italian Carlo X Nightstand

About the Item

Nightstand hand-made in Italy in the mid 1800s using pIne and pegged construction. The nightstand features a single drawer over a door, both made of inset panels framed by molding. The inside of the cabinet is divided in two sections by a single scalloped shelf. The chamfered corners of the case are decorated by a hand-carved motif, and the nightstand still sits on its original onion feet. The top is made of a single board with inverted ogee edges and square corners. This is a very interesting and unique nightstand because of the beautiful light green color and hand-painted poppies and decorations. The combination of green and red help every element of the piece stand out, making this not just a practical piece of furniture but also a decorative addition to a bedroom or bathroom. The paint, although not original to the piece, was applied using ancient painting methods that rely on natural powder pigments and natural glues to make the gesso and tempera. The crackling of the paint, the color combinations and the decorations of the nightstand give this small nightstand a lot of depth and character. This is a unique piece that will add a splash of color to a room and can fit well with both antiques as well as contemporary furniture.
