About the Item

LOUIS XVI STYLE ORMOLU-MOUNTED PARQUETRY INLAID BEDSIDE CABINET WITH BRECHE VIOLLETT MARBLE TOP Retailed by Mercier Frères, labeled inside drawer circa early 20th century label on reverse 14982 (same number stamped and written on the cabinet) mounts stamped CF and numbered Item # 404XQP26W An exceedingly fine example from the Parisian cabinetmaker Mercier Frères from the first quarter of the 20th century, this fabulous bedside cabinet features mahogany veneers with marquetry latticework across the facade of the sans traverselower drawers, these with intricate designs of foliage framed in light and dark wood panels separated by satinwood stringer-inlays flanked by ebony borders. The top is a wonderful breche viollett marble surface surrounded by a pierced brass gallery, this projected over the cabinet with corners that curve outward in conformity with the columns of the cabinet. These are mounted with brilliant ormolu of crisply chased foliage flanking a single drawer in the upper hung with a horizontal mount of beautifully developed bas-relief leaves and berries. The brass work around all exposed edges is of the highest quality. The cabinet is raised on outward splayed bronze-mounted sabots. The mounts are marked CF with serial numbers on the reverse (for example, the top corner mounts are marked CF 3211) and the cabinet is stamped in several areas with the 14982 serial marking. The marquetry inlays bear close though not perfect resemblance to the patterns offered by François Linke to his clients (see François Linke 1855-1946, The Belle Epoque of French Furniture, Christopher Payne, 2003, p. 396, pl. 449). See New Orleans Auction Galleries, December 11, 2021 lot 408 for a table documented as being made by at least 8 times by François Linke and several examples by Millet and Zwiener Jansen Successeur - this example is stamped behind the bronze sirens "3271 CF", perhaps the bronzes cast by the same foundry as the present nightstand. Measurements: 34 9/16" H x 18 1/4" D x 24 1/2" W Condition Report: Top is free-floating - we are happy to affix it permanently, but it is intended to be removed for safety when shifting the cabinet. A very fine state of preservation throughout. Some mild sunbleaching to all surfaces. Traces of tarnish and discoloration to the brass and bronze mounts. Typical indicators, including very minor scuffs and abrading. Ready to place. French Louis XVI Style Parquetry & Bronze Antique Armoire Wardrobe ca. 1880
Located in Shippensburg, PA
LOUIS XVI STYLE PARQUETRY-INLAID ORMOLU MOUNTED ONE-DOOR ARMOIRE Paris, France circa 1880 lock stamped "B & P Paris", back of one mount stamped "L.P." Item # 403BDA14P This exquisite Louis XVI style armoire is a picture of the high precision cabinetwork the French ébénistes of the 19th century were capable of producing. Crafted in Paris in the last years of the 19th century, the cabinet is finished on the top with an original marble top shaped to conform to the cabinet profile. This is raised by a thin crown of egg-and-dart molding over a repeating greek-key border executed in solid brass. The front door is a brilliant display of parquetry inlay work, an extraordinarily complicated arrangement that comes together flawlessly: the kingwood veneer ground is set diagonally while being bookmatched down the center to create symmetry - a form that is more fully developed in the sides of the case where these diagonal veneers are set into rectilinear and square panels for greater effect. This surrounds a rosewood and stringer-inlaid border encasing a latticework of rosewood astragals over squared lighter hue woods. The application of the veneers is so convincingly executed - note the curves of the rosewood inlays where the grain of the wood twists to create spirals that appear to layer upon one another. In the center of the door is a large ormolu mount of a Neoclassical urn with bacchus masks on either side raised over a pierced footer embellished by foliage. This door opens using only a key, as there is no knob or pull hardware to allow access to the space. The interior is a very spacious and simple arrangement that allows clothing to be hung while valuables and smalls are stored in the cupboard at the top. No keys are presently available for the door or the interior cupboard, but if locking the armoire is important than having keys fabricated is never terribly difficult and can be done by our shop upon request. The lock is marked on the inside by the fabricator "B & P Paris", while one fo the rosette mounts on the corners of the cabinet is marked "L.P." A magnificent example of Parisian craftsmanship from the late 19th century, this is a very fine armoire of ideal dimensions for both function and aesthetically. Unlike so many armoires and wardrobes...
