Textured Wavy Customizable Nightstand in Sculpted Ash by Luke Malaney
About the Item
The T nightstand is hand sculpted from pigmented solid ash with a natural oil / wax finish. It was originally created in Brooklyn, New York, as a personal gift for the artist's brother’s new home. As such, it was designed to integrate the qualities of sturdiness, aesthetic balance, and longevity that one weaves into something one would make for oneself.
Although Malaney's whimsical free-form designs often walk a fine line between furniture and sculpture, this particular piece is made with function and utility firmly in mind, the solid ash and the dimensions making it easy to incorporate into many different spaces and adapt as needed. Meanwhile, it is also an experiment in texture, with two of the facades meticulously gouged with a tongue-and-steel ball bit to achieve a uniformly unique life-like expression. The wavy edges and the pigments are also characteristic of the artist’s continuous explorations in blending the naturalistic with the dreamlike and the solid with the dissolving.
