A Dutch Architectural Bird Cage, 19th Century

About the Item

A Dutch Architectural Bird Cage, 19th Century Provenance: Private Australian Collection. Description: The bird cage designed after the Sociëteit Veenlust or ‘Veenlust Society’ building. Having been moved from Amsterdam to Veenlust in 1883, the building remained for some 100 years as a cultural centre before facing significant renovations and eventually demolition in 1999. Based on the original structure, the cage comprising three levels, the uppermost with a pitched roof and detailed façade mounted by cartouche signage ‘SOCIETEIT VEENLUST’, a dome to either two levels surmounted by a finial, atop the main stepped level with a veranda encircling the front and both sides, arched to the front and descending to lower level of conforming layout, the whole rendered with polychrome application.
