Machine Age Industrial Wooden Foundry Mold for a Chrome Car Grill, France, 1950s

About the Item

Architectural wooden foundry mold for the industrial car industry in the 50s, now a decorative machine age object for a modern interior. Foundry molds and patterns are wooden tools, cut or built up to create negative space, which in turn is used to create the reverse shape or form used for casting metal. To make a wooden mold, wood must be stacked, like a relief, or cut out, like a recessed relief, with handles or other pieces to grip and lift the mold from the casting material. Individual pattern pieces that are wrapped in the casting material are cut and shaped. Such as a chrome car grill with this type. Antique foundry molds are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are unique, authentic pieces that have been formed through a number of processes and craftsmanship. In addition, these pieces can be hung on the wall to serve as works of art.
