1820s Antique Scottish Silver and Steel Dress Dirk

About the Item

A magnificent, fine and impressive antique Scottish silver and steel dress dirk with ensuite knife and fork; an addition to our presentation silverware collection. This magnificent antique Scottish silver and steel dress dirk set has an angular form. This antique Scottish dirk is fitted with an exceptional carved wood handle embellished with a woven design and accented with studded silver to each cross section. The circular rounded pommel of the handle is ornamented with a collet set smokey topaz. The dirk is further ornamented with a silver mount encompassed with applied Scottish thistle and foliate decoration. The steel blade of this impressive weapon is embellished with scrolling leaf designs accented with the battle names 'Salamanca', 'Fuentres d'Onor' and 'Busaco', in addition to the regiment number '42'. The spine of the blade is ornamented with an alternating scalloped shaped design to the broad edge, all to a plain tip/false edge. The posterior surface of the blade is plain and unembellished. This dress dirk set features an ensuite knife and fork, each reflecting the identical handle ornamentation to the dirk. The knife and fork incorporates plain tapering silver ferrules to a steel leaf decorated blade and three tine fork. Each piece of this magnificent set is fitted to the original leather sheath, each accomodating an individual compartment. The leather sheath is embellished with two silver mounts ornamented with further Scottish thistle designs, in addition to a chape/terminal reflecting the same design. The upper portion of the sheath features an impressive mount displaying the Royal Highlander's emblem above the regiment number '42'. The posterior surface of the sheath incorporates an applied silver bracket accented with leaf decorated supports. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Italian silver sterling jug. This exceptional antique Italian sterling silver jug has an oval paneled, flared form onto a circular domed foot. The surface of this antique jug is plain and unembellished, with a matte, subtly planished finish in keeping with the patination of a piece from this period. This impressive piece is fitted with an exceptional cast sterling silver scrolling handle, accented with a leaf design emanating from the thumbpiece, this leaf ornamentation comprises the upper terminal. The circular foot is encircled with a band of embossed bead decoration. This impressive antique silver jug has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as sterling standard silver (925/1000). Patination or Patina is a subtle coloration or tarnish which forms on the surface of some metals, produced by oxidation or other chemical processes. A good patina proffers an aesthetically pleasing look. Condition This antique silver jug is a very good gauge of silver and exceptional quality for its type. The jug is in exceptional presentation condition. Italian hallmarks struck to the surface of the jug and rim of the foot are all very clear.
