About the Item

Mid-20th century british military folding steel blade machete/sword by Joseph Westby & Co. By: Joseph Westby & Co. Material: steel, metal, iron, synthetic, bakelite Technique: hammered, plated, molded, polished, forged, cast, metalwork Dimensions: 3 in x 1.5 in x 6 in Date: mid-20th century, 1930-1939 Style: Mid-Century Modern Place of origin: England This mid-20th century british military folding machete has a sturdy steel blade crafted by Joseph Westby & Co. The full-tang blade is 15.5 inches long when opened and folds into a synthetic handle for protection and portability. Forged from high-quality steel, the blade has a utilitarian brushed finish and a pronounced clip-point shape ideal for cutting through dense brush or vegetation. It comes with a protective steel shell for the blade to keep it sharp and safe when folded. Stamped into the ricasso is the maker's mark. Joseph Westby & Co. was a british cutlery firm founded in 1876. Though no longer operating today, Westby was a respected military supplier in the WWII era known for blades of durable construction. This exemplary folding machete embodies the pragmatic design and sturdy build quality that made Westby a trusted provider to the british forces during wartime. Despite its age, the blade remains sturdy and functional. When the blade is extended, the piece reaches 11.5 inches in height. Signs of oxidization and wear are evident on the metal components of this piece, including the blade and the steel guard, as can be seen in the photographs.
