About the Item

This magnificent 16th-century German two-hand sword is a rare and historically important ceremonial weapon, hand crafted by renowned blade-smith Christoph Stantler (active circa 1555–1600) of the Passau workshop. Measuring an impressive 180 cm in length, this original piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of gothic arms, blending both symbolic authority and martial aesthetics. The sword features a striking flattened waved double-edged blade with a broad ricasso flanked by pronounced side-lugs- a hallmark of ceremonial and display swords used in by guards of high ecclesiastical or noble rank. The iron hilt showcases elegant fleur-de-lys side rings, deeply sculpted quillons, and a finely aged leather-bound grip, tapering gracefully into the pommel. The blade is deeply struck with the hallmark of Christoph Stantler, confirming its prestigious origin and authenticity. Remarkably preserved, the sword remains in excellent condition with no signs of restoration. The integrity of its materials- including the leather, iron, and forged steel- attests to centuries of careful stewardship. It retains its original patina and presence, making it not only a museum-worthy artefact but also a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of arms and armour. A rare opportunity to acquire a documented and hallmarked processional sword from a master German smith, this piece stands as a powerful testament to the artistry and ceremony of Gothic/ Renaissance weaponry. Detailed provenance is available upon request.
