A nice example of an Imperial Japanese Army Type 19 Company Grade Kyu-Gunto or Officer’s Dress/Parade Sword with saya (scabbard), a design approved circa 1886. The blade is possibly an heirloom blade, dating to early Shinto or late Koto Period. Original ubu (tang), mumei (unsigned), notare (blade pattern or hamon) is mostly nioi based (hazy finish), tight hada (grain pattern)- possibly koitame or komokume, mune (back side of the blade) takashi (high back), yashuri mei (file marks) are Taka No Ha (Feathers of the Hawk), the Kojiri (end cap of the scabbard) is chestnut shaped, and the blade has a Tori-Zori curvature. Very good overall condition, with minor surface losses and imperfections, and light wear commensurate with age and use. This Edo period 26mm bore or 30 ‘Monme’ matchlock carbine is intricately inlaid with gold and silver wires showing the Immortal Tekkai Senin blowing his soul out of his body in order to meet his master on Mount Hu. The lower section has the mon (crest) of the ‘Maru Ni Kuginuki’ clan and the signature ‘Tomioka Sahaiji Yoshihisa’. The stock is carved out of Japanese oak. Edo Period 1615-1868, circa 1840.
