Rare Hand Carved 1587 Fighting Scots City of York Coat of Arms Armoiral Crest

About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely hand carved wall plaque coat of arms for the city of York Fighting Scots dating from 1587 This is a very good looking and well made coat of arms, the full history of the crest is dated below, I’m unsure of the exact of this piece, looking at the quality of the sceptre crown and the timber patina I would say mid Victorian but it could be earlier Dimensions: Height 27.5cm Width 22cm Depth 4.5cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point Official blazon Argent on a Cross Gules five Lions passant guardant Or. Origin/meaning When the arms were officially granted is not known, but it is likely that the arms were granted by King Edward III (1327-1377). He made York his capital when fighting the Scots. The arms show the cross of St. George, the patron saint of England, and the lion of England. The arms were officially recorded in 1587 after the 1584 Visitation. The right to use the sword, mace and cap by the mayor of York was granted in 1396 by King Richard II, when York received county status. The cap is normally only used by dukes, not by cities. Even though these attributes are not formally granted, they have been used behind the arms since the 18th century. This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouse Condition Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.

Unique and Large Crucifix with a Rare Size Hand Crafted Ceramic Corpus of Christ
Located in Lisse, NL
Unique and artistic crucifix from the European Midcentury Modern era. Over the centuries the life and teachings of Christ have inspired many an artist to create His image in just as many ways as there were artist. In more recent decades the way in which Christ on the cross has been portrayed has changed significantly from how He was portrayed in previous centuries. Just like Christ was portrayed very differently in the early 20th century as opposed to how He was seen and portrayed in, for example, the Baroque era. And this way will keep changing as evolve. Just like with the other Styles, this modernist version of Christ either speaks to you or it does not and the way in which different people will see and experience this Christ will be very different too. That ofcourse also is the job of every artist, to make you think about an artwork and make you feel something at the same time. Not only is this unique modernist sculpture different in design from most Christ sculptures you will have ever seen, it also is all hand-crafted in a very rare material. This ceramic work of religious art also comes with a mild glazing and the unique elongated design makes it even more modern and 'experimental'. Thanks to the perfect metal hook on the back, safely mounting this piece is much easier than one would expect. If you already have a place and space in mind for Him then maybe you should be this sculpture's next custodian. Mind you, our fair price for this unique and very large, Midcentury crucifix...
