About the Item
Set of Edo Period Samurai Armor Box Covers (Yoroi Bitsu Covers) with Gold Family Crests
Japan, 18th century (Edo period)
Dimensions: Approx. 40 × 40 cm, H 53 cm
An extremely rare set of original samurai armor box covers (yoroi bitsu kawakabura), crafted from thick hand-stitched leather and adorned with bold gold maki-e style emblems. These protective covers were used to shield the wooden armor chests that housed full suits of samurai armor.
Each cover is finished in a deep indigo-black lacquered surface, decorated with large gilt crests (kamon) — including the stylized “mae” (前) character meaning “front,” and a circular manji crest (卍), an ancient Buddhist symbol associated with strength, continuity, and auspicious energy. The presence of these crests likely denotes high-ranking ownership or temple association.
Stitched along the sides and fitted with tie cords, these leather wrappings were both functional and ceremonial — used during the transportation, storage, or presentation of armor. Surviving examples in such condition are exceedingly rare, especially with intact gilding and original leather ties.
Materials: Lacquered leather, gilded motifs, cotton cords
Condition: Excellent for age; wear consistent with 18th century ceremonial use. Minor cracks and patina add to authenticity.
Provenance: Private collection, Japan
These museum-quality covers represent a tangible connection to the prestige and ritual of the samurai class.
