1840 Visits to Remarkable Places: Old Halls, Battle Fields, and Scenes

An extra illustrated example of the first series of Howitt's guide to the scenery of England, in beautiful half morocco bindings by Zaehnsdorf. First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Signed Binding The first edition of the first series of William Howitt's work, extra illustrated and bound in two volumes. In half calf signed bindings by Zaehnsdorf, with cloth covered boards. Extra illustrated, with twenty-plates to volume I, and twenty-seven plates to volume II, alongside numerous vignette illustrations. Including one double page plate. The majority of these plates date to the nineteenth century, with three twentieth century plates also present. With a title page to volume I, and half title to volume II, and with pagination running continuously across both volumes. Former owner's inscription of W. D. Oliver to a front blank of volume I. With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front pastedown of each volume. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England. In a half calf signed binding, with gilt detailing to back strip, and cloth covered boards. Back strips a touch age toned, with boards bright. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Former owner's inscription to a front blank of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned, but generally clean and bright, with only the odd light handling mark. Overall: Near Fine
