About the Item
An important early New York City guidebook compiled by John Doggett, Jr., providing a detailed portrait of Manhattan in the mid-1840s — before the Civil War, before Central Park was laid out, and decades before the Brooklyn Bridge would link the city to Brooklyn. At the time of publication, New York’s population was under 400,000, and its northern reaches were still pastoral farmland.
This compact 160-page volume lists the city’s civic institutions, businesses, churches, markets, public works, courts, and cultural organizations, offering both a practical directory and a valuable historical record of antebellum urban life.
Binding & Format:
Original publisher’s embossed plum cloth with gilt-stamped title to front board. 5.5" H × 3.5" W. Includes Memoranda pages at rear with period notations.
Dimensions:
5.5" H × 3.5" W × 0.5" D
Condition:
Good; cover worn at edges, spine faded, small crease to front board, scattered foxing; binding sound. Owner names in ink and pencil.
Provenance:
From a Private Collection, 36 Gramercy Park East, New York. Ownership inscriptions of Elizabeth H. Kip and George Goelet Kip. The Kip family is one of New York’s oldest Dutch Knickerbocker families, descended from Hendrick Hendricksen Kip, who arrived in New Amsterdam in 1637. The Goelet branch was tied to significant mercantile and real estate holdings. This provenance directly links the book to the city’s colonial-era elite.
Historical Context:
Published the year the Croton Aqueduct began supplying fresh water to the city, this guide predates many of New York’s defining landmarks and transformations. Central Park would not be conceived until the 1850s, and the Brooklyn Bridge would not open until 1883. Doggett’s guide captures the city in the final decades before these sweeping changes.
