About the Item

A beautiful edition of naval historian William James's detailed and richly illustrated history of the Royal Navy. A 'New Edition' of naval historian William James's impressive work, in which he aims to provide an exacting and detailed account of every naval war operation between 1793 and 1820. James consulted every published work on the subject that he could locate, alongside French and English official narratives, while also including details from ship logs, and where possible personal testimonies from individuals involved. Illustrated with four folding plates and four portraits to volume I; three folding plates and four portraits to volume II; six folding plates and three portraits to volume III; two folding plates and four portraits to volume IV; four folding plates and four portraits to volume VI, and nine folding plates and five portraits to volume VI. Collated, complete. With an armorial bookplate reading 'Stemmata Quid Faciunt' to each front pastedown. Retaining the original half titles. Sometimes described as a 'monument to accuracy', James's work offers an almost unparalleled level of detailed insight into naval movements during the Napoleonic wars and surrounding years. Rebacked, with original morocco boards restored, and endpapers renewed. Externally, excellent. A touch of rubbing to fore edge of boards, otherwise externally fine, with gilt detailing to back strip. Armorial bookplate to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, with instances of light spotting to portraits of volumes I, II and VI. Overall: Near Fine

1788 The Dramatick Writings of Will. Shakspere
By William Shakespeare
Located in Bath, GB
A beautiful and scarce 'Bell's Edition of Shakespeare', the vanishingly scarce large paper variant, illustrated with engraved plates. The very scarce complete twenty volume set. A large paper edition, uniformly bound in full morocco. In 1785, John Bell began to issue the 36 separate plays of Shakespeare individually, collecting them here in twenty volumes in 1788 as the 'Dramatick writings of Will. Shakspere'. The set is scarcely found complete. The first two volumes here are a remarkably comprehensive and broad 'Prolegomena' to Shakespeare's works, and offer interesting analysis of Shakespeare from an era where many of his plays were often interpreted differently, both in their production and in their critical reception. The subsequent eighteen volumes consist of the plays themselves, along with notes from Samuel Johnson and George Stevens, a highlight of this particular edition. Volumes I & II: Prolegomena To The Dramatick Writings of Will. Shakespeare. Nine plates to volume I, and eight to volume II. Volume III: The Tempest and Two Gentlemen of Verona. Four plates. Volume IV: The Merry Wives of Windsor and Much Ado About Nothing. Four plates. Volume V: Measure for Measure and A Comedy of Errors. Four plates. Volume VI: Love's Labour's Lost and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Four plates. Volume VII: The Merchant of Venice and As You Like It. Four plates. Volume VIII: The Taming of The Shrew and All's Well That End's Well. Four plates. Volume IX: Twelfth Night and Winter's Tale. Four plates. Volume X: Macbeth and King John. Four plates.
