About the Item
A beautifully bound full calf fifteen volume set of the works of English writer, essayist, and literary critic Thomas De Quincey.
Uniformly bound in full calf signed bindings by M. Ogle & Co.
Volumes I-XIV are published between 1852 and 1860 by James Hogg, while volume XV is the final volume of Adam & Charles Black's fifteenth volume, published in 1863.
Best known for his 'Confessions of an English Opium-Eater', many scholars believe that with this work De Quincey inaugurated the tradition of addiction literature in the West.

Volume XV: The Works of Thomas De Quincey including all his Contributions to Periodical Literature, Second Edition, A&C Black, 1863, volume XV 'Biographies of Shakespeare, Pope, Goethe, and Schiller'. Illustrated with a frontispiece and folding plate.
In full calf signed bindings, with extensive gilt detailing to back strips. Externally, excellent. A touch of rubbing to back strip heads and tails, and joint heads. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.

This smart set includes almost the complete works of Blackmore.
Blackmore was one of the most famous novelists of the second half of the nineteenth century, best remember today for his 'Lorna Doone'.

'Clara Vaughan', complete in three volumes, published in 1864. The very scarce first edition. Half-title is present to each volume. Original publisher's cloth bound in the rear of each volume. Two pages of adverts to the rear of Volume III.
'Cradock Nowell', complete in three volumes, published in 1866. The uncommon first edition.
'The Maid of Sker', complete in three volumes, published in 1872. The very scarce first edition. Half-title is present to each volume.
'Alice Lorraine', incomplete in two volumes, being Volumes II and III of a total of III volumes, thus lacking Volume I. Published in 1875.
