Very scarce complete in seven volumes.
The first edition.
A sweeping biography on the life and work of the seventeenth century English poet John Milton.
As well as discussing Milton's life, the author narrates the political, ecclesiastical, and literary history of his time, putting Milton's life into the context of British history.
Volume I covers 1608-1639, Volume II 1639-1643, Volume III 1643-1649, Volume IV 1649-1654, Volume V, 1654-1660, Volume VI 1660-1674. Volume VII is the index.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, one plate, and one folding plate to Volume I, and a frontispiece to Volume VI. Collated, complete.
By David Masson. This was his magnum opus.
Bookplate of Andrew Carnegie to the front paste downs. Carnegie was a Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist, who led the expansion of the steel industry in American, resulting in him becoming one of the richest Americans in history.
In a half crushed morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart, with only a few very light marks and rubbing. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.

A beautiful and scarce 'Bell's Edition of Shakespeare', the vanishingly scarce large paper variant, illustrated with engraved plates.
The very scarce complete twenty volume set. A large paper edition, uniformly bound in full morocco.
In 1785, John Bell began to issue the 36 separate plays of Shakespeare individually, collecting them here in twenty volumes in 1788 as the 'Dramatick writings of Will. Shakspere'. The set is scarcely found complete.
The first two volumes here are a remarkably comprehensive and broad 'Prolegomena' to Shakespeare's works, and offer interesting analysis of Shakespeare from an era where many of his plays were often interpreted differently, both in their production and in their critical reception.
The subsequent eighteen volumes consist of the plays themselves, along with notes from Samuel Johnson and George Stevens, a highlight of this particular edition.
