1861 The Book of Household Management

About the Item

The first edition of Mrs Isabella Beeton's important cookery work, one of the most influential of its genre ever publisher, complete here with the original colour plates. The first edition, first impression of this work, with 18 Bouverie St stated to the illustrated title page and the Strand to the title page, the farmyard frontispiece, and page 57 listed to the first line of the errata. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, colour title page, twelve colour plates, and in-text engravings. Collated, complete. Isabella Beeton's comprehensive guide to cookery, with a wide variety of recipes, advice for the organisation of kitchens and larders, marketing, and a calendar of food in season. She also gave advice on table decorations, how to wait a table, how to set a table, and how to carve meats and fish. Some of the recipes included vary from meat, poultry, salads, tarts, cold sweets, sandwiches, bread, jams, and icing. This is an interesting look at life in a Victorian household, and the running of it. Beeton's work was originally serialised as 'The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine' in twenty-four monthly instalments in 'The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine', her husband's publication. Her work has been constantly expanded over time, and is still in print. In a half straight grain morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Crack to the head of the front joint, smaller crack to the tail of the front joint. Spine is a little faded. Light rubbing to the leather. Only a few minor marks to the boards. Hinges are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound, pages 1109-1112 are detaching due to the hinge being strained. Pages are a little age-toned and clean with the occasional spot. Small tide mark to the frontispiece and engraved title. Overall: Good
