1883-1884 Leaves from the Diary of Henry Greville

About the Item

An extra illustrated first edition of the diaries of Henry Greville, with a signed letter from editor Viscountess Enfield, Greville's niece. The scarce first editions of both the first and second series of this work, in a half morocco signed bindings by Riviere. Tipped in to a front blank of volume I is a signed letter by Viscountess Enfield, the editor of the work and the author's own niece. Dated 1883, her letter reads 'Sir, I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter which was forwarded to me by Smith and Elder today. I do not think there is any portrait of Mr Henry Greville [...] lithographer or engraved in existence at present: I could perhaps supply you with a photograph of him if that. Would do as well, though there are not any very good ones. I remain, sir, yours faithfully'. Extra illustrated: volume I with sixty-two plates, and volume II with sixty-two plates also. These largely consist of portraits. His diaries hold importance as an historical authority from the author's position at Paris between 1834 and 1844. At the time, he was attaché to the British embassy in Paris. Greville was an aristocrat and notes diarist, who held the post of gentleman usher at court With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to each front pastedown. He founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England. In signed half morocco, with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, fine. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Letter tipped in to front blank of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright, with only the odd spot to plate perimeters. Overall: Near Fine

Gleed, Charles S, ed. Rand, McNally & Co.'s Overland Guide From the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean Via Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Chicago: Rand, McNally & Co., 1883. Revised Edition. Rebound in ¼ red leather and cloth boards, with original cloth gilt-stamped pictorial front board saved, new marbled endpapers, and a custom archival slipcase to match. Illustrated throughout with engravings. This is a “Revised Edition” of the Rand, McNally & Co.'s Overland Guide From the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean, via Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The book was edited by Charles S. Gleed and published by Rand, McNally & Co., in Chicago in 1883. It has been artfully rebound in ¼ red leather and cloth boards, with the original gilt-stamped pictorial front cloth board saved, new marbled endpapers, and a matching archival cloth slipcase. Throughout the guidebook are countless engravings, both full page and in-text, from well known engravers of the time. Meant to further entice readers to take this overland journey, the illustrations offer views of key tourist spots, townviews, and scenic destinations, throughout the featured states of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The guidebook is also supplemented by pages of printed advertisements in the beginning of the book, showcasing local businesses, services, and wares. Charles Sumner...
