About the Item
A handsomely bound set of the novels of George Eliot, as well as a short story collection, with many illustrations.
A seven-volume set, one containing two volumes bound in one, in half calf bindings with marbled boards, end papers, and edges.
The complete set of novels of one of the leading novelists of the Victorian era, George Eliot, along with her short story collection Scenes of Clerical Life.
With most of her novels set in provincial England, Eliot's works are known for their realism, psychological insight, sense of place and detailed depiction of the countryside.
Loosely inserted to Volume I are two post cards, one from 1896 and the other from 1926.
This set comprises:
Volume I: Adam Bede. New edition (1895). Illustrated with six plates and a title page vignette.
Volume II: The Mill on the Floss. Stereotyped edition (1893). Illustrated with six plates and a title page vignette.
Volumes III-IV (2vols in 1): Silas Marner. Stereotyped edition (1896). Illustrated with two plates and a title page vignette. Scenes of Clerical Life. Stereotyped edition (1896). Illustrated with five plates and a title page vignette.
Volume V: Felix Holt, the Radical. Stereotyped edition (1896). Illustrated with six plates and a title page vignette.
Volume VI: Romola. Stereotyped edition (1893). Illustrated with a title page vignette.
Volume VII: Middlemarch. New edition (1892). Illustrated with a title page vignette.
Volume VIII: Daniel Deronda. New edition (1891). Illustrated with a title page vignette.
Collated, complete.
Volumes I to VI are undated; dated from copies held in the University of Cambridge Libraries and the University of Leeds Libraries.
In half calf bindings. Externally, smart, with a little rubbing to the extremities and shelf wear to the boards. Gilt remains bright. Spine is slightly cocked to Volumes I, II and V. A little cracking to the head of the front joint to Volume VI. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Pages 17 to 32 of Volume VI are coming loose to the tail, but remain intact.
