About the Item

A uniformly bound set of works by James Anthony Froude, including his important history of England. Complete in sixteen volumes, being twelve volumes of 'History of England', and four volumes of 'Short Studies on Great Subjects', smartly uniformly bound. 'History of England' offers an extensively detailed history of England from around 1530 to 1588. The author worked on this series for over twenty years, extensively researching. He worked from original manuscripts from the Record Office and Hatfield House. The series is known for its dramatic writing, rather than being a scientific analysis of history. The author also defended the English Reformation, and focussed heavily on the figures of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. When published, the work was a success, though it did receive some criticism from publications such as the 'Christian Remembrancer' and the 'Edinburgh Review'. In 'Short Studies on Great Subjects', Froude explores a vast selection of subjects, including the life of Thomas Becket, Annals of an English Abbey, The Dissolution of the Monasteries, Sea Studies, Protestantism, and the Grammar of Assent. James Anthony Froude was an eminent historian, and the editor of 'Fraser's Magazine'. In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Light rubbing and marks to the boards and spines. Spines are faded. Marks a little heavier to 'History of England' Volume VII. Bookseller's label to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Overall: Near Fine
