1970 A Portfolio of Thomas Bewick Wood Engravings

About the Item

One hundred stunning wood engravings by Thomas Bewick in two beautifully presented portfolios with an introductory volume, enclosed in a slipcase. One of 150 limited edition copies of these two portfolios and an introductory volume in quarter cloth bindings, with leather spine labels and leather tips, in a clothbound slipcase. This set was printed by hand on TROYA paper. One hundred exquisitely detailed wood engravings, each in its own folder, contained between two very smart portfolios, by the English wood-engraver and natural history author Thomas Bewick (1753-1828). Section 1 contains his wood engravings of birds and vignettes; Section 2 contains his wood engravings of quadrupeds and vignettes. With an introductory volume which includes acknowledgements and an index to the portfolios by James M. Wells, and a booklet explaining the background to the original 1945 publication and later 1970 publication of these wood engravings. Bewick is often considered to be the founder of high quality wood-engravings. He is best known for his A History of British Birds, admired mainly for its wood engravings, especially the small and humorous tail-pieces. He also notably illustrated editions of Aesop's Fables throughout his life. Collated, complete. In quarter cloth bindings in a clothbound slipcase. Externally, the portfolios and introductory volume are in excellent condition. Introductory volume is internally firmly bound, with very bright and clean pages. Folders and plates to the portfolios are very bright and clean. A little soiling to the bottom of the slipcase, with some shelf wear to the right-hand board, but otherwise very smart. Overall: Fine
