(4); rubricated title page. 63 wood engravings by Noël et Paillard from drawings by Daniel Vierge. Handsome red pebbled morocco binding by Bretault (in gilt on front dentelle), with raised bands and gilt titling; turn-ins with elaborate gilt scrolls, marbled endpapers, t.e.g., rest uncut. Hinges professionally repaired, scratch at bottom of rear cover. Original illustrated paper wrappers and strip bound in, as well as the subscription advertisement with first spread. Paper evenly toned with very occasional foxing; binding square and tight. Copy 83 of 100 grand luxe copies on Japon ancien as stated on the limitation page. [BNF30930179] An elegant, large paper edition on lush Japon paper of Prosper Mérimée's short novel, Colomba, which first appeared on 1 July 1840 in the Revue des Deux Mondes. Through the lens of historical fiction, the novella examines the Corsican vendetta. The story has been adopted on a number of occasions for the screen including the 1950 film "Vendetta" directed by Mel Ferrer. Condition: Near fine
