The Concerned Photograher, 1st edition, 1968

About the Item

Published by Grossman Publishers, 1st edition, 1968. Hardback, English text. This magnificent volume is based on the exhibition “The Concerned Photographer”, held at the Riverside Museum, New York in 1967. This monumental exhibition was then reproduced as the opening exhibition at the Photographer’s Gallery in London, in 1971. This volume is dedicated to the ideals of photojournalism, with an introduction by Cornell Capa himself, one of the three founders of Magnum Photo, the legendary photographic collective. The concerned photographer is not a dispassionate outsider, they are all personally involved in their projects and their art in life, sometimes sacrificing their own lives for the vitality these photographs are presenting to us. As André Kertész poetically put “ Every subject has a rhythm. To feel this rhythm is the ‘raison d'être’. The photo is a fixed moment of such a ‘raison d'être’ which lives on in itself.” For Capa, it’s a glimpse into the Spanish Civil War with the figure of a fallen soldier; for Bischoff, it’s the spattering of snow on the roofs and pines of a Shinto temple; For Kertész, it’s a tender yet passionate kiss of a couple completely oblivious to the gaze of the photographer. Compiled with over two hundred photographs by these masters, this volume is the crème de la crème of photojournalism. Dimensions: 21.5 x 25 x 2.5 cm Condition: Very Good
