Three-quarter leather boards and presented in a custom slipcase. This 1946 reprint of Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of Roman Empire was published by the Heritage Press. A collaborative effort to produce the full books, the introduction and index was written by Professor Bury and the letter to the reader by Philip Guedala. These volumes were bound by Maurin, as can be seen on the second free end paper. Gibbon originally published the six volume set in 1776-1788 and Heritage Press condensed it into only three volumes. Edward Gibbon was an historian as well as a member of the British Parliament. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, as it was fully named, was Gibbon’s greatest achievement. The work covers the events of the most powerful Empire in the world from the second century AD all the way to the fall of Constantinople in 1453 AD. The 18th century was mostly consumed by neoclassicism, leaving the European world enthralled with the Ancient Greeks and Ancient Romans. It was during this era of antiquarians that Gibbon researched and wrote his prized work. This was not only one of the first comprehensive studies on the fall of Rome, but had such an impact that classicists today still refer to The Decline and Fall regularly. Condition: Overall very good condition. The three-quarter crushed morocco leather is rubbed and has some loss along edges. The pages are decorated with gilt along the top edge and are internally clean and bright. All three volumes are housed in a custom archival matching maroon slipcase decorated with a depiction of Julius Caesar. Dimensions: 9.75” H x 6.75” W x 7” D (three volumes with slipcase).
