Designs by Inigo Jones for Masques & Plays at Court; A Descriptive Catalogue of Drawings for Scenery and Costumes mainly in the Collection of His Grace the Duke of Devonshire, K. G. with introduction and Notes by Perby Simpson & C. F. Bell Oxford: Oxford University Press / Walpole and Malone Societies, 1924. 4to 12 1/2 x 10 inches (316 x 253 mm); viii, 158 pp., frontispiece + 6 in text illustrations + 51 plates (tipped in at rear on fabric mounts) + 6 in text. Frontispiece caption printed on heavy board, with color illustration tipped in; self-portait of Jones on title page. Quarter bound in ecru linen and blue-grey board; spine and edges of boards lightly toned, and bumped at extremities, paper evenly toned. INIGO JONES (1573 – 1652) was a very influential architect in England and Wales in the early modern period. He was the first person to introduce the classical architecture of Rome and the Italian Renaissance to Britain and to employ Vitruvian rules of proportion and symmetry in his buildings. He made major contributions to stage design by his work as theatrical designer for several dozen masques, most by royal command and many in collaboration with Ben Jonson. From the estate of Robert Cecil Bald (1901 – 1965), an Australian scholar of English Literature, who moved to the US to teach at Cornell University in 1937 and was then professor at the University of Chicago 1952 – 1965.
