Douglas Kirkland's Light Years Three Decades Photographing Among the Stars
About the Item
For thirty years Douglas Kirkland's camera has negotiated our relationship with the stars. Light Years is his photographic autobiography --a brilliant constellation of seventy-five of the major performers of our time. In the wild, experimental Sixties, Kirkland's improvisational photojournalism broke with the formal, highly stylized tradition of studio photography. His photo essays on Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor caught an emotional incandescence that suddenly flared before the camera. In the sexually direct Seventies, his photographs of Jessica Lange, Cher, and Sophia Loren showed us a franker, more overtly provocative star. And in the Eighties, with its new obsession with fame, Kirkland's pictures of Jennifer Grey and Debra Winger have captured the decadent, futuristic charm of media--conscious stars as the seek to carve out their territory, their unique image. Along with the great women stars, Kirkland has photographed the major male stars: here is the vivid intensity of Jack Nicholson; Orson Welles in all his brooding majesty; and a duet posed by beguiling Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. Through it all Kirkland has been our surest, clearest touchstone for the varieties of glamour that have stimulated us, excited us, provoked our hopes and our fantasies. What makes Kirkland unique among celebrity photographers is not only the sense that he shares our feelings for the stars, but that his subjects are responding directly to those feelings, directly to us. Light Years has been produced on a scale as grandly expressive as its subjects. Accompanying each of the more than one hundred color photographs are Kirkland's recollections--surprising, revealing, intimate--of his encounters with the stars. And Light Years' huge format and sumptuous color brings us literally face to face with the stars as they cavort before us, imploring us, amusing us, shocking us, and delighting us
A heavy hardcover book. Great table book.

Early Panorama Children’s Book Hiawatha Illustrated by Willy Pogany London 1914
By Willy Pogany
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
Antique panorama children’s book illustrated by Willy Pogany and retold by Edith L Elias. A total of 14 panels, one side with illustrations, and the other with text.
Published by George G. Harrap & Company.
This book is part of a children’s series by Willy Pogány of folding panoramas illustrations and text, inspired by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s 1855 epic, The Song of Hiawatha. Lines from Longfellow run underneath Pogány’s illustrations, which follow the Ojibwe child Hiawatha from his early kinship with the wild animals, through his struggles with Nahma, King of Fishes, and his own estranged father, Mudjekeewis, up to his courtship of Laughing Water (Minnehaha). The prose text by Edith Elias, printed on the verso of the panorama, carries Hiawatha’s story farther, through the death of Minnehaha and the coming of “the Pale-Face Chief.” Pogány’s dynamic frames, with their striking use of negative space, show the influence not only of Golden Age illustrators like Walter Crane, but also the new generation of cartoonists like Winsor McCay...

Three Sterling Silver Mounted Commemorative Horse Hoof Inkwells
Located in London, GB
These interesting inkwells were crafted in Britain between the Victorian period and early to mid-20th century.
The works have been created from horse hooves, applied with sterling silver mounts. Each hoof has been set onto a silver horseshoe and features a silver top and lid. Two of the tops have been engraved to imitate real horse hair, while the third is more simple, with banded ornament. All three have been given covers, two of which feature commemorative inscriptions. One lid states, ‘The Grey/1907-1917’ — presumably the name of the favourite racehorse, whose hoof this is — and another reads, ‘Mavourneen/ Died June 29th / Aged 53’. ‘Mavourneen’ is an Irish Gaelic word meaning ‘my beloved’. The dedicatee’s age of 53 implies that they were a human, perhaps a jokey, or racehorse owner. The lids open up onto a silver-lined interior, intended to be used for storing ink as part of a desk arrangement. The inkwells are stamped, on their underside, with silver hallmarks and maker’s marks, ‘J.T.’ and ‘C & CS’.
