The Gran Teatre del Liceu (Catalan: [ˈɡɾan teˈatɾə ðəl liˈsɛw]; Spanish: Gran Teatro del Liceo [ˈɡɾan teˈatɾo ðel liˈθeo]; English: "Great Lyceum Theater"), commonly known as the Liceu, is a historic theater in Barcelona, Spain, located on the iconic La Rambla. It is the city’s oldest theater still in operation for its original purpose.
Founded in 1837 at a different site, the Liceu moved to its current location and officially opened on April 4, 1847. The theater has undergone several reconstructions due to devastating fires—once in 1861 and again in 1994. After each disaster, it was swiftly rebuilt, reopening on April 20, 1862, and October 7, 1999, respectively. A tragic incident occurred on November 7, 1893, during the opening night of the season, when an anarchist threw two bombs into the stalls, resulting in the deaths of around 20 people and injuries to many more.
Once the largest opera house in Europe by seating capacity, with 2,338 seats, the Liceu held this distinction from 1847 until 1989. Since 1994, the theater has been managed by a public foundation, with a governing board representing the Ministry of Culture, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Provincial Deputation of Barcelona, and the City Council of Barcelona. The Liceu is home to its own choir (Cor del Gran Teatre del Liceu), symphonic orchestra (Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu), and music conservatory (Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu).
About the author Roger Alier.
Roger Alier graduated with a degree in modern history, his doctoral thesis obtained the mention cum laude and the Extraordinary Doctorate Prize in 1979, and was published by the Catalan Society of Musicology. He has been a professor at the Univ. Of Barcelona since 1970, and a professor of music history and opera history since 1987; From 1993 to 2006 he also taught an annual opera course at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He is a music critic for the newspaper La Vanguardia, and was director of the universal music section
