The English House Through Seven Traces by Olive Cook. Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd., 1968. First edition hardcover with dust jacket. A history of English domestic architecture from the framed cottage of pre-Norman Britain to Art Nouveau mansion. It has black and white photographs by the English architecture and landscape photographer Edwin Smith (1912-1971).
It is a large book with 320 pages of interesting photographs and descriptions of grand and modest English domestic architecture, including many interesting curiosities. Staring with small, stone outbuildings with straw roofs, the beginnings of English architecture are as impressive as the manor houses and mansions that would follow. The book explains why houses were built the way they were, and how they have held up through the years.
