About the Item
This book is the third volume in the portfolio collection, inaugurated with the first two volumes devoted to the work of Pierre Chareau. Volume III is dedicated this time to the work of the interior architect and furniture designer Francis Jourdain (1876-1958).
A multidisciplinary artist, Francis Jourdain was an interior architect, furniture designer and theoretician. A leader of the French modern movement in the first half of the twentieth century, both the man and his work were admired by the most important writers, artists and creators of the time, who were his collaborators and friends. In 1929, a founding member of the UAM – Union des Artistes Modernes – alongside Rob. Mallet-Stevens, René Herbst, Raymond Templier and Hélène Henry, among others, Francis Jourdain implemented new concepts in interior architecture and furniture from 1909 and established himself as one of the instigators of the French modern movement.
The selection of works presented in this book covers a large part of Francis Jourdain's furniture creation. An ideal exhibition in a way in which the images - proposed for reading according to two major themes: Construction and Function - show the extent, diversity and coherence of the designer's stylistic vocabulary.
