About the Item
The Great Exhibition. New York: Gramercy Books, 1995. Hardcover with dust jacket. 328 pp. A facsimile of the illustrated catalogue of London's 1851 Crystal Palace Exposition. The exposition was the forerunner of today's world's fairs. It was held in the Crystal Palace, which was specially built in London's Hyde Park. The event gathered together examples of artistically designed and manufactured objects from many nations displaying progress, craftsmanship, and commerce. It was organized into four main divisions: Raw Materials, Machinery and Mechanical Invention, Manufactures, Sculpture and Plastic Art. The event was opened with a large ceremony by Queen Victoria and was visited by more than six million people after its opening.
