Published in conjunction with an exhibition on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, May 5-Aug. 15, 2010, and at the Brooklyn Museum, May 7-Aug. 1, 2010.
High Style is the first comprehensive publication on the Brooklyn Museum's remarkable collection of costumes and accessories. This lavishly illustrated volume presents more than two hundred examples drawn from its nearly twenty-four thousand women's and men's garments, accessories, hats, and shoes. Brooklyn's collection was founded in 1903 to provide inspiration for America growing fashion industry.
Through its Department of Industrial Design, Design Lab, and Department of Costumes and Textiles, the Brooklyn Museum became one of the most important centers for the study of fashion. As a result, the holdings are rich in clothing by American designers and the great French couturiers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The museum is also fortunate to have assembled what is considered the definitive group of works by the great couturier Charles James.
Organized in chapters that represent the collection's strengths, High Style presents Brooklyn's masterworks and provides brief histories of how they were collected. Included are historical costumes from the 1760s to the 1890s; sumptuous gowns by Charles Frederick Worth; custom designs by the important French nineteenth-century couture houses; examples from the early twentieth-century houses, including those of Lanvin, Chanel, and Poiret; iconic Surrealist- based designs by Schiaparelli; the incomparable sculpted ball gowns of James of the 1940s and 1950s; ensembles from postwar phenomenon Dior, his successor, Saint Laurent, and Givenchy. American designers of the 1920s to the 1980s are well represented. Among the women are Valentina, McCardell, Cashin, and Maxwell; among the men, Mainbocher, Norell, Beene, and Halston. Augmenting this survey is a unique selection of regional costumes and historic French fashion dolls.
Early in 2009 the Brooklyn Museum entered into a landmark partnership that transferred ownership and custodial responsibilities to The Metropolitan Museum of Art while preserving the collection's identity and providing accessibility to Brooklyn's staff. High Style honors both the collection and the innovative arrangement that will ensure its preservation and availability for the future.
Published for the first time in paperback, this lavishly illustrated volume originally appeared in 2010 to celebrate the transfer of the Brooklyn Museum’s historic costume collection to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This comprehensive survey highlights more than 200 works selected from this internationally renowned collection, which comprises nearly 25,000 extraordinary women’s and men’s garments and accessories from the 18th through the 20th century. Among the featured works are sumptuous 19th-century gowns from the House of Worth, exquisite dresses by the great 20th-century French couturiers, iconic Surrealist-based designs of Elsa Schiaparelli, sportswear classics from pioneer American female designers.

Northwest Style: Interior Design and Architecture in the Pacific Northwest Hardc

Northwest Style: Interior Design and Architecture in the Pacific Northwest Hardcover Book.
By Ann Wall Frank Chronicle Books, 1st edition,Oct 1, 1999 - Architecture - San Francisco, 204 pages.
With its lush forests, rugged coast, and long rainy season, the Pacific Coast has spawned a style that is informal, organic, and above all eclectic. Northwest Style captures the spirit and diversity of this region's architecture, landscape, and lifestyle by presenting a collection of beautiful and distinctive homes in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. Here, an overlapping of elements and architectural styles is common: A house designed as a tribute to nature makes use of an open floor plan and native materials—both significant elements of early regional Modernism; the decor of a chic urban loft reveals nuances of Japanese design. While the styles vary, a sensitivity to the environment and a desire to accentuate the natural beauty of the region lie at the heart of almost every design. Gorgeous color photographs show these dwellings in their natural settings and highlight architectural and decorative details. Full of inspiring ideas for architects, designers, and home decorators...
