Iconic Limited Edition Fred Stein Photo of Albert Einstein

About the Item

Stunning large gelatin silver limited edition photograph; one of the most iconic images of the 20th century. One of only 450 in the edition. “In 1946, when Albert Einstein was in residence at Princeton University, Fred Stein was granted ten minutes of the great man's time to take a portrait. After the time was up, Einstein's secretary came in to usher Stein out. However, Einstein insisted that he stay, saying that their discussion was too interesting to cut short. The secretary came back repeatedly, but the visit extended to two hours. The resulting portrait by Fred Stein pictures a deep intelligence engaged in thought. It became an iconic image, and one of the most famous photographs ever taken of Albert Einstein" (Dawn Freer, "Fred Stein: A Retrospective"). Printed later (1994) on behalf of the Fred Stein estate by Stein's son, Peter Stein: "Printed and archival processed by a master printer under Peter Stein’s supervision and to his approval, and matched as closely as possible to his father’s vintage prints." (Fred Stein website). Size: image 10.5 x 14 in.; with matte 16 x 20 in. Number 38/450. Limitation and "Albert Einstein Princeton 1946" on the front of the original matte (beneath the photo); signed by Peter Stein and with stamp "Estate of Fred Stein" and "Authorised Estate print" on verso of matte.

"Some people mistake my work for satire. I don't object because satire is a powerful force, so if the work is seen that way it serves one function. But I don't agree. The pictures are taken in the spirit of finding myself in the other, or finding the other in myself."—Larry Fink...

Bill Burke - I Want to Take Picture
By Bill Burke
Located in New York, NY
"The triumph of this book is that it does manage to reflect the mad experience of traveling in Southeast Asia, while still reflecting on what it all means" (Roth 101).

FIRST EDITION of one of the seminal photobooks of the 1980's. SIGNED BY BURKE INSIDE ORIGINAL DRAWING OF HIS HAND. One of only 1000 copies printed of the first edition.

"Bill Burke has become known for his large-format portraits shot on Polaroid Land film, which have the formality and feel of nineteenth-century photographs whilst remaining acutely modern in their sensibilities. In his best book, I Want to Take Picture, this technique is entirely appropriate, since it records his personal pilgrimage to southeast Asia, duplicating the enterprise of the old colonialist photographers but adding a contemporary twist...

"Although the pictures have a nineteenth-century feel, the book is also a diary that records a twentieth-century experience. Burke not only uses his photographs, but also employs documents- reproductions of ephemera like money...

Fred Herzog: Vancouver Photographs by Fred Herzog. Signed Edition exhibition catalog (Vancouver Art Gallery January 25-May 13, 2007). 160 pages with numerous color photographs throughout. "Iconic and influential color images of Vancouver street life from a master photographer who has spent the past fifty years documenting the city, published to coincide with a major exhibition of his work. His eye dwells on the raw urban underbelly of the city: second-hand shops, vacant lots, barber shops and greasy spoons, crowded with people and their stuttering dreams. Since he arrived in Vancouver from Germany in 1953, Fred Herzog has roamed the city's back streets with his camera. Herzog draws upon documentary traditions while incorporating an outsider's sensitivity to a new environment. His color images of street life in the 1950s and '60s prefigure the "New Color" of photographers such as Stephen Shore and William Eggleston. The text includes essays by Grant Arnold...
