AUTHOR: KIDGELL (John) TITLE: The Card. PUBLISHER: London: for the Maker & sold by J. Newberry, 1755. DESCRIPTION: FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 2 vols., 6-5/8" x 4-1/4", hand colored engraved frontis as issued, trompe l'oeil plate at page 12. Bound in contemporary full speckled calf over cords, gilt lettered red leather spine labels. CONDITION: Hinges rubbed but covers firmly attached, head of spines fine, foot of spines rubbed with some minor loss, internally clean and bright, a VERY GOOD copy in a contemporary binding. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A scarce and little known novel accepted to contain the earliest known surviving mention of base-ball as we know it: "the younger Part of the Family,... retired to an interrupted Party at Base-Ball, (an infant Game, which as it advances in its Teens, improved into Fives, and in its State of Manhood, is called Tennis.)" Vol.1 Chap.2 p.9.
