This book is titled Catalogue of the Collection of Jewels and Precious Works of Art. The Property of J. Pierpont Morgan Compiled at his Request by G.C. Williamson, Litt.D. London: Chiswick Press, 1910. Limited edition of 150 copies printed on handmade paper for private circulation only. This being number four. Large folio [15 x 11 1/2 inches; 377 x 300 mm). xxi, [3, blank], 183, [1, imprint] pp. Title printed in black and red. With ninety-four mounted photogravures in black and white including frontispiece. Additional illustrations in the text. Plates with descriptive tissue-guards. Half green morocco over green cloth. Morocco ruled in gilt. Spine stamped and lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Silk page markers. Housed in a green cloth, velvet lined slipcase. A very good copy of a very scarce book. “The whole of the plates of this book have been engraved by Hallet Hyatt, of 111, Oxford Street, London. All the photographs have been taken by him, and the whole of the hand-coloured facsimiles were painted under his supervision. The book has been printed at the Chiswick Press. The Index has been prepared by Miss Lilian Mackie.” (From the colophon). “The objets d’art illustrated include rings, rosaries and rosary beads, reliquaries, necklaces, pendant jewels, silver and niello medallions, portrait medallions, ivory and enameled caskets, buttons, seals, chalices, cups, vases and clocks” (from Christies) George C. Williamson was an art historian who sometimes advised J. Pierpont Morgan on his purchases. This is one of three catalogues he produced of Morgan’s collection. “This very large, beautiful, and superbly-produced book was manufactured from the finest materials as befitted the tastes and the pocketbook of J. P. Morgan, and providing one of the finest collection catalogs of all time. The depicted and described objects fall into the following classes: jewels, portraits in wax, carved woodwork, rock crystal and glass, gold and silver plate. precious materials, and the precious objects of Prince’s Gate.” - Sinkankas 7243.

Wear consistent with age and use. The book has some light wear, including a gouge on the spine and some wear on the page edges. The sewn-in silk bookmarks have begun to fray at spots. The slipcase has some moderate to serious moisture damage with staining. Does not effect book.
