Mastering the Art of French Cooking is a two-volume French cookbook written by Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, both from France, and Julia Child, who was from the United States. The book was written for the American market and published by Knopf in 1961 (Volume 1) and 1970 (Volume 2). The success of Volume 1 resulted in Julia Child being given her own television show, the French Chef, one of the first cooking programs on American television. Historian David Strauss claimed in 2011 that the publication of Mastering the Art of French Cooking "did more than any other event in the last half century to reshape the gourmet dining scene. Featuring 524 delicious recipes and over 100 instructive illustrations to guide readers every step of the way, Mastering the Art of French Cooking offers something for everyone, from seasoned experts to beginners who love good food and long to reproduce the savory delights of French cuisine. Julia Child, Simone Beck, and Louisette Bertholle break down the classic foods of France into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of dishes—from historic Gallic masterpieces to the seemingly artless perfection of a dish of spring-green peas. Throughout, the focus is on key recipes that form the backbone of French cookery and lend themselves to an infinite number of elaborations—bound to increase anyone’s culinary repertoire. “Julia has slowly but surely altered our way of thinking about food. She has taken the fear out of the term ‘haute cuisine.’ She has increased gastronomic awareness a thousandfold by stressing the importance of good foundation and technique, and she has elevated our consciousness to the refined pleasures of dining." —Thomas Keller, The French Laundry

The great book of French impressionism by Diane Kelder Large heavy art table book by Diane Kelder. A survey of works by French artists of the Impressionist movement focuses on Pissarro, Sisley, Manet, Morisot, Monet, Renoir, Cassatt, Degas, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Absolutely gorgeous extra large coffee table book - “The Great Book of French Impressionism.” With just under 450 pages, this huge, handsomely designed volume contains more than 400 illustrations with 16 spectacular color spreads that fold out to nearly 2 feet in width. This book celebrates the richness and exuberance of the Impressionists' world--a world of light and color, of sunlit fields and shimmering waterscapes, of bustling city views and intimate domestic scenes. Contains more than 400 illustrations, over 200 in full color, with sixteen fold-out color spreads. In the text, art historian Diane Kelder traces the development of Impressionism from its roots in landscape and realist painting through its focus on modern urban life to its ultimate goal: to fix on canvas the fleeting moods and effects of nature in a world that stands still for no one. The author examines the lives and works of all the major Impressionists, including Manet, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Seurat, and Cézanne, and shows how their work influenced others in the movement, ultimately giving rise to the new art of the 20th century.- Title The Great Book of French Impressionism Author Horst Keller Translated by Alexis Brown...
